What is Competition Team?
Competitive Dance is a recent addition to the Newfoundland dance community, where competitors compete dances in styles such as jazz, tap, ballet, contemporary, lyrical, musical theatre, hip hop, and acro dance. We place our dancers in categories that are appropriate for their level of training and where they will feel the most comfortable and can truly excel. Our competition team focuses on technical training, positive social bonds and building self-confidence through goal-based training.
Who can audition for Competition Team?
Steffen dance students (ages 7-18 as of September 1, 2020) can audition for the team. Interested dancers must take a minimum of two regular technique classes (ballet, jazz, or modern) a week alongside the competition team practice. Current competition team members do not need to reaudition this year due to the change in competition schedule.
How do I register to audition?
Email alicia@steffendance.com to book your audition spot by July 15. Competition auditions will take place on July 18. Due to COVID-19 restrictions we will need to audition in small groups. The audition schedule will be sent out on July 16, after we have heard from all interested dancers. Dancers will be grouped together based on age. When you book your audition you will be sent an audition form that you are required to fill out prior to your audition.
If you are unable to make the audition on July 18 please let us know prior to July 18 and we will make alternative arrangements.
How does the audition work?
Dancers should wear a body suit and tights/leggings (girls) or jazz pants and plain coloured tshirt (boys). Please bring all your dance shoes. You will be taught several combos that will show us your technical abilities as well as the styles at which you excel. At the end of the audition, dancers will be given an opportunity to show any dance or acro tricks you feel that we should see.
Students accepted into the team have the following obligations:
1) Weekly Team Technical Class September-May (we do not meet on long weekends or other holidays)
All technical classes will be between 12:00-4:00 on Sundays. The students will be assigned their exact class time after auditions.
2) Additional competition rehearsals for their competition pieces. All pieces, unless otherwise agreed between the parents and the choreographer, will be rehearsed on Sunday. If you have a scheduling conflict for Sunday please let us know at the audition.
We expect our Competition Team students to proudly represent our school and team and 100% commitment is required in order to maintain your position on the team.
